Overview:
When you download video submissions from a Vloggi project, they are encoded in mp4 format, which then open by default in QuickTime Player on Apple Macintosh and some other computers. However, on computers running iOS 14 or later, QuickTime may experience sound playback issues due to a codec compatibility problem.
MP4 files typically use the H.264 codec, which has been the industry standard for many years. However, newer versions of QuickTime are increasingly optimised for H.265—a codec that offers better compression efficiency and improved quality at lower bitrates. When QuickTime expects H.265 but receives H.264 instead, it can lead to compatibility issues, such as glitches in sound or video playback. This mismatch between the expected and actual codecs can result in unexpected playback problems on Macs and some other devices using the latest QuickTime versions.
Issue:
- Default Behavior: Downloaded videos automatically open in QuickTime.
- Problem: Sound may not play correctly due to codec limitations in QuickTime on Mac iOS 14+.
Solution:
- Workaround: Import the video into an alternative editor such as Canva or Filmora WonderShare.
- Note: The issue does not affect the Raw video or standard definition downloads. You may wish to download the raw files complete with original audio. – Read more about downloading original files.
- Outcome: These applications use different codecs that restore proper sound playback.
Steps to Resolve:
- Download the Video: Save the video file to your Mac.
- Avoid QuickTime: If sound issues occur when playing the video in QuickTime, don’t rely on it.
- Import into an Alternative Editor:
- Open your preferred editor (e.g., Canva or Filmora).
- Import the downloaded video file into the editor.
- Playback Verification:
- Play the video within the editor to confirm that the sound works as expected.
Additional Tips:
- Ensure your alternative editor is up-to-date for the best performance.
- Restart the application or your Mac if issues persist after re-importing the video.
